A+ Teeth

A+ Teeth, a school-based cavity prevention program offered by Vista Community Clinic. VCC provides visual dental assessment, fluoride varnish application, sealant(s), and referrals for treatment if needed. This dental assessment does not replace a regular dental checkup but can save families time with these services being offered at school.

What are dental sealants?

The chewing surface of the back teeth, known as molars, have pits and grooves where food and germs often get trapped. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to fill the grooves in the molars. They harden to form a protective shield over the tooth to help teeth stay clean and decay-free.

What does fluoride varnish do?

Fluoride restores the outer layer of teeth and prevents germs from making cavity-causing acids.

How A+ Teeth Works

Dental education and screening services may be covered by your child’s dental insurance. VCC services are available to all children.

Please call (760) 631-5000 ext. 1051 if you have questions on A+ Teeth or if you need more information on how we can help your child enroll in a dental health insurance plan.

Do you have a child entering kindergarten?

A+ Teeth provides dental health assessments and necessary paperwork for kindergarten enrollment.

      Medication Assisted Treatment

      Safe, Respectful Medication Assisted Care

Opioid Use Disorder can develop from use of both prescribed and non-prescribed opioids. Sometimes referred to as opioid abuse, opioid dependence, or opioid addiction, OUD is a problematic pattern of opioid use that causes significant impairments at work, school, or home, among other criteria or distress, such as unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control use, social problems, and a failure to fulfill obligations.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, over 2.1 million Americans suffer from OUD, which contributed to over 47,000 overdose deaths in 2017.

Our office-based medication assisted treatment (MAT) is for people who are dependent on opioids such as heroin or prescription painkillers (i.e. oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, codeine, morphine, etc.) MAT works to control withdrawal or craving symptoms and is prescribed by primary care clinicians. The VCC MAT program includes medication management, counseling, group education (when available) and social service referral support to help patients achieve and maintain recovery.

Patients must be 18 years and older, with a diagnosis of Opioid Use Disorder to qualify. Recovery from addiction can help you live a healthy, productive life.

              Fatland, Sarah

Dr. Sarah Fatland joined the VCC team in 2020 as the Chief Medical Officer for the organization. Her drive to work as a physician began at age 5, inspired by the work of her grandfather. After completing her medical training in 2011, she had the opportunity to practice the full spectrum of family medicine in a rural community- inpatient, outpatient, prenatal, Emergency Room, and more.

After relocating to New Zealand in 2014, she spent two years working in a family medicine clinic there.  This experience helped shape Dr. Fatland’s outlook on health and healthcare systems and delivery.  It was in this environment that she really began to understand the important role the community plays in its overall health. This new outlook drove her desire to work in an Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), like VCC, upon returning to the United States. She believes strongly that the care that FQHCs are able to deliver, alongside the Primary Care Medical Home (PCMH) model,  is the best delivery system of healthcare. Working in this arrangement allows her to work closely with patients to better understand their needs, their health goals, and to provide accurate information so those patient goals might be achieved.

Dr. Fatland is passionate about the whole person and how the various systems integrate to contribute to health, making Family Medicine the best fit for her as a physician. She believes that it is important to understand that patients all have very individual health goals, and that listening and understanding those goals is what is going to develop the best plan for achieving them.  She also believes that patient needs are best served through proper education and resources, and works closely with her patients to help them achieve health success through compassionate care.

              McCarthy, Sarah

Nurse Practitioner Sarah McCarthy enjoys working with a diverse population. She came to VCC because of the wide range of services we offer to provide patients with well-rounded and comprehensive care. Sarah wants to be part of a team that makes a positive impact in patients’ lives and strives to do that for each of her patients.

For Sarah it is important that patients feel empowered by being a part of the decision-making process during their care. She wants patients to know their voices are being heard and their needs are being met so when they leave the office, they feel confident that they are on the right track toward health and wellness.

In order to make good decisions about healthcare, patients must feel comfortable asking questions, coming into the office, and understanding their plan of care. Sarah works hard to ensure that patients are getting the preventative screenings they need to maintain good health as well as to provide education and open communication to patients with current medical conditions.

Sarah came over to sunny California from the East Coast with her 2 daughters, husband, two dogs, and one turtle. They enjoy going to the beach as often as possible, eating “all the ice cream,” as she says, laughing, and napping.
